The Complexity of the Habsburg Empire
After 1648 the Habsburgs were forced to retrench and rely more on the resources of their hereditary domains, especially in Austria and Bohemia. They had to use again very careful diplomatic maneuvering, not necessarily to agglomerate more power, but just to maintain peace within and outside the Holy Roman Empire. It was a complex agglomeration with very little in common, with very different ethnic and linguistic and even religious complexions all around theseDifferent domains and not much uniting them other than the ruling house.
