The Importance of Recognizing Our Forefathers' Sins
Thousands of black veterans were assaulted, threatened, abused, or lynched following military service. No one was more at risk of experiencing violence in targeted racial terror than black veterans who had proven their valor during the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. At least 13 veterans were lynched across the United States after the war. Many of them were in uniform, which many white people saw as an affront to America's racial caste system.
