Music and the Purging of the Emotions

The word Cutharissus was often used in medical contexts to talk about purging the noxious fluids of the body. Aristotle writes there, music should be studied not for the sake of one, but of many benefits. Music may also serve for intellectual enjoyment, for relaxation, and for recreation after exertion. For emotions such as pity and fear, or again enthusiasm, exist very strongly in some souls and have more or less influence overall.
