I Never Saw My Dad Hit My Mom
I do not believe that my parents knew about what was going on inside that house. My mom has never mentioned that as part of the context of the story. Ruth did not confide in her, which is not surprising given the times these things were not talked about. Looking back through family photos, I can see how thin mom became during this time. Her eyes look large and often sad. Decades later, she told me how she'd become clinically depressed, had even contemplated suicide. She said she couldn't go through with it, couldn't leave me and Ted behind unprotected.
