There is definitely situations where chemical diversity is important in evolution. In those kinds of cases, promiscuity of enzymes can be highly advantageous. But how do we think about the evolution of toolkits when many of those tools will never even get used? How does natural selection operate on a diverse toolkit if you only ever need the screwdriver? This is a really bizarre thing that we could argue that these sort of promiscuous factors would be useful, but what if you never get the chance to use them?
