There's kind of this connection between the medieval environment that they're in and these ideas of like purgatory and suffering. The film set that the movie kind of ends on that where he meets the dwarf and the woman that he goes on a couple dates is somebody describes it as at one point as like a Boschian nightmare so there's like Hieronymus Bosch and purgatory are kind of interwoven as themes into this which is kind of in contrast but also complementary to the medieval beauty and romanticism of the place.
