CHAPTER

The Nationalist Party Plays a Part in the Liberation Struggle

Fanon: The nationalist party plays a pacifying role, attempting to keep the revolutionary struggle from occurring by acting as a peaceful release valve for the anger of the colonized. In this sense, we can see the nationalist parties playing a counter-revolutionary function but this is not the end of the story according to Fanon. Despite their attempts to stop the outbreak of revolutionary violence, the nationalist parties actually still end up playing a partially progressive role in the liberation struggle. They treat more fuhrer and fervor for national liberation and the movement for getting rid of the colonizers through violent actions. This usually causes the colonists to prop up the nationalist leaders and grant them formal independence.
