The Importance of a Grounding in a Discipline
Many of the people that formed the Santa Fe Institute at the very beginning, were sort of offshoots from Los Alamos. Remarkably, a national lab allows greater freedom of thought in that sense than a university. I would also argue, and I disagree with some of my colleagues, I think having a grounding in a discipline is actually the best way to begin.
