The franciscans built a large wooden friary and church, which they called nuestra senora de la conception. And through the 15 nineties, this friary was used as a base for a renewed missionism. They wanted to secure a pathway extending from saint augustine over into western florida and the gulf coast. So you see this new sort of orientation in this new sphere of spanish influence basically running from saint augAugustine westward into what's now the florida panhandle.
