The Grounding Problem in Large Language Models

Stephen Harnad wrote a paper in 1999 or 1998 on the symbol grounding problem. He argued that symbols in AI systems are not grounded, they're provided by human programmers and just typed in. For us, for us, with the words we use, those symbols are rooted in our activity in the world. Lampan: "Lack of grounding" might affect how good large language models are.
