Learning a Language Is a Very Efficient Process
The brain is very efficient so if the brain determines that Chinese isn't necessary to survive because everyone in your environment understands English then it's not going to use. acquiring a language is probably a very metabolically taxing process from the brain's point of view. If you're truly in an environment where you need the language to survive and your brain really understands that on a visceral level then your motivation to acquire the language is going to be so strong than whether or not you're using truly efficient learning techniques.
