If you remove that word from such statements as humans or just robots made of chemicals, you get a much more profound and even pantheistic statement. I am not throwing proverbial shade on materialists, as i often agree with them. You know, the meaning is the same either way. But i get why people it there also, because it is a comparison. So the word just is indicating the fact that in the alternative picture, there is something extra thereand the materialist is saying, no, there is in extra there.
