Epicurus was an admirer of democritus, who insisted that everything changes as a result of upward causation. But epicurus concluded that determinism as described by Democritus simply cannot be true. Epicurus introduced this famous, but i should also say, notorious, doctrine, the swerve. It's a huge question whether actually the idea of atomic indeterminacy helps to explain free will.
