The Second Law of Entropy
In the 1940s, quantum physicist Erwin Schrodinger wrote a book called What is Life. It's one of my favorite books of all times to this day and I reread it every few years. He simply says that something is alive, or something is living if it keeps itself in a low entropy state through the use of free available energy. So life is entirely consistent from this perspective with the second law. But even though we don't actually have the power to reduce the entropy of the universe, I still think it's pretty interesting and illuminating to think about life as a force that resists entropy in some sense.
