There is a suggestion that the God talk when it appears, especially in Roman Stoic writing, was more about trying to appease what is a cultural norm. There's some talk in academic circles that this is just an indication of saying certain words to make sure you didn't get in trouble kind of thing. I don't know enough to say more on that, but that is something I've heard somebody offer as a reason for the God talk in some of these texts.
