60 years before titanic disaster, burkenhead left britain bound for south africa. She was taking troops, a lot of them from ireland as well, to fight in the african wars. There were about maybe in excess of 600 men aboard burkinhead. The senior soldier aboard realized right away that they weren't all goin to get into lifeboats. And so he ordered that the women and children would be takin the available life boat spacies. This was revolutionary. At the time, before that, when a ship struck trouble, it was just every an for himself if you can do your best. But on burkinhead, everything was changed by that
