The word ape meant both primate and to imitate. And I think that competition always involves a lot of imitation because you're competing with people where you're imitating them. So there is something very deep in the human, and this is how we learn language, we learn culture by copying our parents, the people around us. They find it strangely validating. You don't know what you want. You look to what other people want. You copy what they want. Everybody ends up copying everybody else. This is how you end up with the hyper-tracked education system where it's the most ferocious competition. From K through 12 for all the same slots at the same few elite universities
