Mendelssohn Octet in E Flat Major, Op. 20
Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast
Mendelssohn's Dancer
Mendelssohn has six parts play triplets and the two cellos play a gruff rhythm against them, adding to the tension of the music. Notice though that this time we don't get the rhythmic unison, the marker of returning home. After another fourth violin solo, Mendelssohn will bring us to rest with a short first violin in the Dancer. So we've had two different characters throughout this movement, a heavenly one and a much more dramatic one.
