The Genetic Basis of Depression
Genetic variations can affect whether individuals respond to certain types of stress by becoming depressed. Stress includes sleep deprivation, physical or emotional abuse, and lack of social contact. Environmental influences like stress can also sometimes give rise to epigenetic changes that affect subsequent gene expression. Studies of these genes may someday help identify the form of treatment a patient would respond to best.
