Should I Teach Nonsense Words?
The only way that I would ever say, yes, let's teach nonsense words is if I'm teaching multisolabic words. Proficient readers process every phoneme in a word. But what I want them to recognize is you may need a lot of unknown words but these are the strategies that you apply when you're trying to decode an unknown word. That would be the purpose of putting nonsense words in front of kiddos without it being an actual assessment.
