Breastfeeding Is Important for Mobilizing Copper

Mother gives almost all of her liver copper stores to the baby in that third trimester and through the cord blood via the placenta at birth. In a human adult liver, we have seven milligrams of copper total. And mom has to give 70 milligrams in the third trimester. So she has to give 10 times the copper she has in her own liver into the liver of her baby. The breast milk contains retinol, which is what is needed to activate the copper.
