BPA Exposure During Pregnancy
Once BPA enters a bloodstream, it's thought to be modified in the liver. The placenta of humans contains an enzyme called beta glucuronidase that is present and modifies BPA back to its unconjugated active form immediately. This may be why many of the adverse health effects due to BPA exposure have been found to occur during fetal development. For example, a single exposure to BPA has been shown to raise BPA levels by a 16-fold in urine,. It can also cause endocrine, metabolic, and immune problems in cancer.
