Bodhisattva Sitting Under the Tree
Joseph Campbell describes this in his book here with a thousand faces in very mythopoetic language. So I just want to read Campbell's description of the Bodhisattva sitting under the tree the night of his awakening. It's a little bit long but it has it has some powerful imagery so he placed himself with the firm resolve beneath the Bodhi tree and straight away was approached by Kamamara, the god of desire and death. The dangerous god appeared mounted on an elephant carrying weapons in his thousand hands. Mara is the embodiment of delusion and ignorance. All the forces of desire and fear and doubt, they appeared in his mind.
