A Brief History of Swordsmanship in Tosa
Loyalism was becoming something of a national movement. Opposition to the newly proposed treaty with america was widespread among samurai who felt the treaty represented a failure to protect the country. There was some sympathy for loyalist motives, even if class consciousness prevented them from joining outright. The movement was also a vehicle for another social class with a lok of social klaut but little political power to try and get into politics.
