What Is the Meaning of the Word Bandit?

The word bandit came to mean government power or jurisdiction. The Frankish word borrowed by the later Romans in Gaul was Wera. And that's the original version of the word war in modern English. A Germanic root word passed into Spanish and gave us guerilla as in guerrilla warfare.
