The Japanese hierarchy was badly divided and that's why I developed one or two chapters in When the Shooting Stop to the, there's no other word for it. The palace intrigue with the six-man war council, which essentially ruled Japan from 1941 to 45, seriously split down the middle. Three hardliners who feared what the Japanese officials later called losing Japanese-ness of spirit and those who recognized that surrender was the only option.
