Carmen is this kind of beautiful model-turned-consciousness researcher. There's a scene where she says, the problem is with our whole culture. What part of ourselves have we lost and what does it mean to be living a half-life in that sense? I think there's a deep sense in which Carmen is kind of the better scientist than Kirk. She might be the best scientist in the book of all the characters.
