The Importance of Race in the Church

The church had a major fight and in some ways it's still ongoing in some respects over the definition of legitimate marriages. There are still lingering quotations that get recycled barring interracial marriage as either discouraged or doctrinally forbidden depending on the time period we're in. I just started to see the way that race was sort of the last time that we thought about marriage really illuminated for me what was at stake in the priesthood ban. It was very much about enforcing segregation and especially enforcing segregated marriage whenever they talked about why we needed to to have a priesthood ban.
