The Role of Sacred Plants in the Origin of Humankind
The spectrum of how these plants are used in various cultures isn't a binary, sacred or profane. You have traditional use of sacred plants by indigenous people and the emergence of syncretic Catholic religions that use ayahuasca. There's also Terrence McKenna's stoned ape theory that the ingestion of psilocybin by proto-Hominids was crucial for the development of human culture. In a certain regard, the use of mushrooms is just part of a much larger culture of foraging.
