The Role of Human Rights in Environmental Impact Assessments
Can this approach of thorough and transparent environmental impact assessments and seeking permission from local populations actually work? Or do the local people always get the short end of the stick? And the answer, as you probably guess, is that it depends. One case where it has been successful, for the most part, is the mining project Njok mentioned in Northern Sweden with the Sami people. Unfortunately, in the case of the dam in Argentina, so far things aren't working quite as well for the Mapuche people.
