The West Boeliness of the East German Government
East German newspapers wrote about Western gangsters who had tunneled in and killed one of their soldiers. The story persisted for exactly 30 years, longer than the wall even existed. Years later, Stasi records revealed that the Eastern soldier was actually killed by friendly fire.
