The History of Heroin

Heroin was discovered by a British chemist in 1874. It was mass produced by German pharmaceutical company Bayer 14 years later. By 1899, Bayer was producing about a ton of heroin a year and exporting it to 23 countries. The Harrison Narcotics Tax Act of 1914 was passed to control the sale of heroin. In 1924, the United States Congress banned its sale outright.
