I think it's you know warfare and slavery go hand in hand in the ancient world. And until you find occasional Roman literary references to people traveling sort of exploring and they come across Romans who had been enslaved or the sons of Romans who had was enslaved in previous conflicts. So there's a wedge gets put in between the citizen and at the other extreme and there are people in the middle, the slave. But we tend to forget that the Athenian democracy that we so admire was also an Athenian Empire which we're a bit less comfortable with.
