In 1985, she snuck into Afghanistan to travel for three months with a small band of Mujahideen and cover their guerrilla war against the Soviets. She visited an Afghan refugee camp inside Pakistan and she was horrified by what she saw there. The refugee camps were full of more than a million adolescents and teenagers who had lost everything.
