The CIA's Loss of a KGB Double Agent
In August of 1985 Ames's divorce from his first wife was finalized nine days later He married Rosario that same month. The KGB worked hard to protect Ames from discovery They created red herrings and disinformation so that the CIA would not suspect a mole in the counterintelligence division. In 1986 he began learning Italian preparing for a new assignment in Rome Before he left he was required to take a routine polygraph exam But he passed the test in July 1988 while in Rome the family returned to Washington Where Paul Redmond became Ames's boss in the Soviet division. Meanwhile Ames continued passing secrets to the KGB but he no longer met with his handlers in person Instead he left classified documents in pre-arranged hiding places
