All of North America, north of about the Canadian border, was ice. Animals and humans could actually walk across a land bridge between Alaska and Russia. Condors are very large birds that lived in California but disappeared at roughly the same time as woolly mammoths. The idea is that when you had a lot of very big animals as we did, 10,000 years ago, then you had a lots of available food.
