At a thousand years old the church was already older than England is now. Cessarchin doesn't necessarily say this but I think it's also evident by his descriptions that at that point there had been some decay, although he does mention the church. The monastery culture really kind of embodied and symbolized that. And so you kind of have to understand that background and have to understand it also in the context of the battle with the pagans.
