By 1348 600 people were dying in Venice per day and the city ordered a stop to the mass exodus of the population Less Venice become a ghost town as a result 60% of Venice about 72,000 people died in the black death. Following Venice the plague entered a new phase when it entered central Italy through the port of Pisa There the plague worked so fast that a galley crew visiting a fish market merely spoke to a fishmonger and the fishmonger soon fell ill. From Pisa the plague moved to pistagia where it was decreed that bodies couldn't be removed from their place of death Until they were enclosed in a wooden box with a lid that had been nailed
