Prince Edward of England took part in the last major crusade from 1270 to 1271. He is best known for killing a knife-wielding assassin with his bare hands. The port of Acre was the last outpost of the crusader states in the Holy Land. It fell to the Mamluks of Egypt in 1291. But what was a crusade really?
