The Aphrodite Pandemos and the Aphrodisiac Orania

Pausanias says that there are two types of love in ancient Greece. He calls them Aphrodite pandemos, or Aphrodite common to the whole city, and Aphrodite orania, or heavenly Aphrodite. Those who follow the common Aphrodite want sexual gratification over intellectual engagement. Petarastic love was favorable to democracy and feared by tyrants.
