How Do We Know When We're Criticized?
When we are critiqued, it is actually triggering something in the amygdala. And it is triggering an intense visceral fear that the tribe will abandon us. So literally what begins to happen is our heart starts to be faster,. Our palms and armpits get sweaty. A lot of us fight it. We get very argumentative and combative. Some of us just shut down. But if you just understand, okay, I'm in a four wall office building room with windows at a door. No one is going to desert me. This is not life or death stakes. There's no threat here."
