Until like 2010 deep learning as a technology was kind of considered useless. One of the big things that changed was that consumer GPUs happened to be really good at doing linear algebra processes, which are exactly what these sorts of models do. And this is also occurring at the same time that the post 2008 tech platform business model is spinning up and you have these guys collecting huge amounts of data. But it's really only in the last like 10 years or so that the technologies we're talking about now have kind of come into being.
