Julian saw Christianity as a competitor in the realm of what he calls philanthropia, charity or philanthropy. Julian's approach to paganism is not necessarily held by a lot of pagans, you know, definitely not. Even his philosophical interpretation was a minority view even among neo-plate-ness. He knew that the laity would interpret religion in more traditional ways and interpret the myths differently.
