The Origins of the Lazaretto Quarantine Station

Quarantine originated as a response to plague. Venice was the first port to have a more or less permanent facility for quarantine. The name Lazaretto is a diminutive Italian form of the name Lazarus. There were dozens of other usually smaller Lazarettos established in Mediterranean ports over next two or three hundred years.
