I think they've been trying to manage expectations, not just to me, but to others for a while. They're very conscious they don't have air power. And the whole NATO doctrine of fighting like that is dependent on something like command of the skies. I think also the Ukrainians want to present Putin as a man who's finished, and for all I know he might be. But authoritarian regimes, even when they're weakened, don't necessarily collapse straight away. They can limp on for quite a long time.
