The election of a ukranian president, vladimir zalenski, in two thousand and 19 was a contributing factor to this. He campaigned on a platform of resolving the conflict in the donbas and eastern ukrane. And then i think there's the broader international context as well. The cremlin has just seen an opportunity at this moment in which it feels it may be able to force the west to the negotiating table.
