The key question you need to answer really is, why do these previous episodes come to an end? And that was really the kind of question I wanted to explore in the book. The conclusion I arrived at was that there are two reasons why historically innovation tends to not sustain itself. Our ancestors are up and took who are not living in the modern world; they lived in a mouth-fusean world. They lived in very stringent and rigid limits on what human beings could do.
