The exposing of SMS over XMPP works flawlessly every time group messages sending receiving all of it. The problem with matrix is they're using a service called aria.net that is using the Bifrost bridge to bridge SMS or excuse me XMPP two matrix now you're called JMP are bridging from SMS to XMPP. It was useful for my daughter who wanted to talk to her friend and said hey I need a number fine here's two ninety nine we buy you a phone account we tie it to your matrix account but outside of those very limited use cases I don't think it's ready quite yet for prime time.
