Japatas Steenstra is really the turning point from, let's say, squid lore based on legends and uncertainty to modern classifications. He delivered a lecture in 1854, where he went through all the different accounts of sea monsters by Rodale and others. And fortuitously, someone gave him a beak from one of the giant squids that had beached.
