Alquin and Charles' Relationship to the Frankish Court

Alquin joined Charles in 786 when he was already an accomplished scholar. He thereafter returned to England for three years before returning to court. In stark contrast to the disappointing political leadership back home, Charles took a genuine interest in religious and intellectual issues. A treatise by Alquin on rhetoric takes the form of a dialogue between himself and his king.
